Betty asks…

Anyone know much about vulva varicose veins during pregnancy?

rob answers:

They are totally normal during pregnancy. They will feel better after you give birth. They might not totally go away though after birth! These veins are from pressure from the baby and so on! Check out babycenter.com
That is what I used when I was pregnant and it answered so many of my questions! :) Hope that helps!

Maria asks…

Any relief for severe varicose veins during pregnancy?

This is my 3rd pregnancy and I’m only 4 months but my varicose veins are worse than ever before. Even my VERY EXPENSIVE compression stockings don’t helps much.
When I told my Dr about how painful they are, she said they will only get worse over the next 5 months and there’s nothing I can do about it.
Is this true or is there something that can bring me relief? It’s so bad, I can’t stand up or walk without pain. Sometimes I feel like I can’t stand up at all.

rob answers:

Unfortunately there is nothing else you can do until after pregnancy. Continue wearing your comression stockings every day to help stay as small as possible.

Mark asks…

pregnancy and varicose veins?

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with or knows of people who had terrible varicose veins during pregnancy. I never had them before becoming pregnant but they have worsened with each pregnancy (3). I have one or 2 now that I am not pregnant and have considered having them “treated” or “fixed” before possibly having one last child. Has anyone had (emboilization or something where they block off the faulty veins) done before finishing having kids?

rob answers:

I do know a few women who have had the surgery and then had more children and they had mixed results.

When a vein is blocked off, the other veins in the area start to work harder. Now this is not usually a problem but when you get pregnant there is additional stress on the veins and what sometimes happens is that the veins that are now picking up the slack become varicose. So now you have new varicose veins.

What you need to do is to see a specialist and they will very throughly look over your veins and see whether they should be worked on after your last child or if if can be done now. Sometimes they will just work on one of two veins and let the rest of them wait until after your last child and after you have lost your pregnancy weight.

Each case is different.

Sandy asks…

varicose/ spider veins during pregnancy?!?

im 20 weeks preg and i just noticed that on my left leg there is a faded turquoise and faded purple vein about 3 maybe 4 inches long on my inner calf. could this be a varicose/ spider vein? im 18, if that matters and it definately hasnt been there very long…. my mom has ‘em pretty bad but she is in her 50′s. if it is, is there anything i can do to prevent them?

rob answers:

What you explain could be, but unless you get pain from it, I wouldnt worry. The fact your mother got them, Im afraid is the reason you could be more likely to get them. Theres nothing you can do to prevent them, some people say to put your legs up a lot and to aviod crossing your legs, so you could give that a try (wouldnt hurt) but for me, I never got them yet I did cross my legs alot and my mother and grandmother both had operations to remove their varicose veins.

Spider veins and Varicose veins are acutally quite different things, spider veins are more of a reddy colour and spread out in different directions where varicose veins usally look like lumpy swollen veins.

You might find you wont get anymore than what youve got also. I hope that is it.
The other thing it could be, is just an everyday run of the mill stretch mark, some women (me included) get them on the back of my knees and arm when pregnant, just like I would on my tummy, if you havent gained too much weight though, its probably not them.

Goodluck
