Your Questions About Varicose Veins Surgery

Robert asks…

I just had varicose vein surgery had the age 18. Does this mean i can’t participate in sports anymore?

I’m an 18-year-old male. I just had vascular surgery to remove a vein that was giving me pain and for cosmetic reasons. My mom tells me that i can never participate in sporting activities again. She says sports are the reason i had such a premature case of varicose veins. Please, could someone tell me if they lived an active life after varicose vein surgery? My youth is pretty much lifted right from under my feet if this be the truth.

rob answers:

Varicose veins are a symptom of an underlying problem, mostly related to poor circulation or having inherited bad “valves” in your legs. My mom passed varicose veins to all 6 of us (my dad does not have any). I believe your mom is wrong, because regardless of what you do, your legs are below. So, live life, continue to enjoy sports, but make a few other changes. Learn to sleep with the foot of your bed elevated at least 6 inches higher than the head (seems like a lot, but you get used to it fast enough) Also, if you can find a way to be upside down occassionally, 5 to 20 minutes a day, at 5 minute intervals this will help by resting the valves in your legs, and supposedly their are advantages to having all the blood rush to your head. Also, focus on a low fat, low sugar diet. This works for me. My legs look bad, but they are 1000 times better than my 3 older siblings, whose legs are disgusting looking. And it has nothing to do with my age. Their legs were gross long before they wer e my current age. Oh, and my legs look a lot better than my identical twin. He only recently started following my advice, last couple of years.

William asks…

Is it possible to get laser surgery done for varicose veins in Chandigarh India? What is the cost ? Toshi?

I would like to get the names of the vascular surgeons who do this surgery in Chandigarh India. Also I would like to get a realistic idea of the costs associated with this procedure. Any other details would be appreicated. Thanks

rob answers:

Have you considered medical treatment and surgical help for this in India? My cousin got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare in India.
She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as all types of medical treatment and surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your medical treatment and surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

Chris asks…

I’m 27, should I have surgery to remove varicose veins in my leg?

I got referred to my local hospital by my GP for varicose veins(not majorly bad but they do slightly ache) & got told that yes I do have varicose veins but treatment not available to me on NHS & it will cost me about £2000/leg which I can’t really afford but I am prepared to pay it if it will stop more problems later in life, I don’t want to get into debt then have to pay it out again in ten years when/if they go varicose again. What should I do, I have a scan booked for 10th October which is gonna cost £240, should I go & see what the scan turns up or try support stockings first?

Please help!!!!

rob answers:

What treatment is available?

Compression
Tight fitted stockings support the veins from outside and help to stop the blood pooling and stretching the veins. These are used either after treatment or on their own.

Injection
If the problem is very localised, a chemical can be injected directly into the bulging vein causing it to shrink (known as “sclerotherapy”) This procedure may be sufficient on its own or may be necessary after surgery or laser to tidy up remaining varicosities.

Surgery
If the whole vein system is incompetent, the varicose veins are stripped from the thigh by making a groin incision under general anaesthetic. A short stay in hospital is required. A bandage and pressure stocking are applied and must be worn for a week or two. Full recovery from surgery can take several weeks.

Further visits may be required to eliminate secondary varicosities and superficial unsightly veins (spider veins).

Laser ablation (“ELVeS”,”EVLT”)
A new non-surgical way of treating varicose veins has been developed over the past five years at centres in USA, Spain and Germany. It is performed as an outpatient “walk in, walk out” procedure with no requirement for general anaesthetic or overnight stays in hospital.

The laser treatment involves the insertion of a laser fibre into the varicose vein of the thigh from the knee to the groin using ultrasound imaging to guide the way. The laser fibre is then withdrawn along the vein, heating it from within to close it, using local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort. The treatment session lasts in the region of one hour.

A pressure stocking is applied and must be worn for a week. The majority of patients can return to normal activities including work the next day. Further visits may be required to eliminate secondary varicosities and superficial unsightly veins (spider veins).

What is best for me?
The exact choice of treatment depends on the particular nature of your veins, your medical background and most importantly, your wishes. At your initial consultation and assessment , the Doctor will arrange for you to have an ultrasound Duplex scan to map out the condition of your veins, discuss your relevant medical background and explain the options to you, for you to decide.

There is no guarantee that there will not be a reappearance of further varicose veins. The taking of regular exercise, modification of your life style, the wear of light support stockings and the avoidance of risk factors (smoking) and becoming overweight will all help prevent you being troubled by varicose veins in the future

Nancy asks…

what is the best way to get rid of varicose veins with out surgery?

rob answers:

However, non medical treatments are more effective for milder cases of varicose vein. Some of these treatments are:

1) Acupuncture and Acupressure

2) Aromatherapy

3) Hydrotherapy

4) Compression Stockings

5) Massage

6) Exercise

7) Healthy Diet
8) Vitamins

These methods also work very well in preventing varicose vein.

Acupuncture and Acupressure

They are effective, but only for the appearance of the veins. Both these procedures will help to keep the veins from worsening, but unfortunately cannot help them to disappear completely.

Aromatherapy

This is an excellent choice amongst the natural treatment for varicose vein, as the oils can help with the swelling that may occur with varicose veins. Massaging the area around the veins with certain oils, can help reduce the size of the veins as well as reduce swelling.

Hydrotherapy

Alternating between hot and cold baths can help with the blood circulation. This is another one of the best natural remedies for varicose vein as damaged veins are normally associated with bad circulation. It is generally easy to do this treatment at home.

Compression Stockings

For a person suffering from varicose veins temporarily, such as while pregnant, compression can be used as a non medical treatment . This might also be true for someone that is mildly affected with varicose veins.

For people who are suffering with a more severe case of varicose veins, compression stockings can be prescribed by their doctors. These stockings can often be purchased at a medical supply store or at a full service pharmacy. The compression stockings for varicose vein treatment range in price from about $50 to $100, depending on the size and style.

These stockings tighten the most at the ankle, and gradually deliver less pressure as it stretches over the knee and towards the thigh. This results in forcing of blood along its natural course despite the damage to the veins. These stockings are not everlasting however, and even the prescription stockings will need to be replaced after a few months of regular use.

Massage

There are several different massage techniques to treat varicose vein. Massage works very well because it makes your skin tender and thus prevent you from getting varicose veins.

Even if you already have varicose vein, the massage can still work wonders for you. It can help to get rid of varicose veins that are already on your skin if you suffer from mild varicose veins.

Exercise

The most important part of non medical treatment for varicose vein is exercise. In fact it is a vital part of maintaining a healthy and balanced body. Exercise gets the blood flowing normally which helps greatly with blood circulation. Besides aerobic exercise, yoga has also been noted as another important aspect of exercise which can be used to treat varicose veins.

Healthy Diet

As with anything that is health related diet plays a big part in treating varicose veins. Make sure that you include plenty of fiber, vitamins A, B, C and E, as well as zinc in your diet. These are just some of the elements that will help you in treating varicose veins.

By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can also prevent varicose veins from occurring in the first place. Always make sure that you maintain a healthy diet which will promote general health and wellbeing for your whole body.

Vitamins

Vitamins are important elements in preventing and treating varicose veins. They are more effective when used in addition to other treatments such as compression stockings. Although natural supplements are not often known to have ill effects, especially those available for mass distribution, some have been found to interact badly with other medications. So, if you do decide to have surgery after all, for your varicose veins, you need to let your doctor know about any supplements that you are currently taking.

The most important varicose vein vitamins you should take regularly to treat varicose veins are A, C, E, B6, and K. In addition, you should also take bioflavoniods and fiber as they are also important for your overall health. Author Resource:- Cindy Heller is a professional writer. Sharon asks…

my mom has varicose veins and she is having surgery on it,and im really worried that something bad might happen during surgery. should i be worrying on the surgery or is it really nothing

rob answers:

I think its normal to worry but as long as you know that she has a credible doctor then I’m sure she’s fine. However, if you’re really against her getting surgery there are also non-surgical options that you can consider.
